About the Book

This work reflects the sustained, collaborative efforts of distinguished scholars who participated in the interdisciplinary seminar series organized by Marmara University, Institute of Educational Sciences, during the 2019–2020 academic year. The series opened with Prof. Dr. Abdullah UÇMAN’s lecture, “Observations on the Literature of the National Struggle on Its 100th Anniversary.” Prof. Dr. Hans Georg MAJER, visiting from the University of Munich, followed with “My Research on Ottoman-German Relations”; this chapter also presents his intellectual biography. Dr. Erol SÜZÜK from Atatürk Faculty of Education then examined “Why Is Interest in the Basic Sciences Declining?” and shared findings from his research on “Physics Identity and Career Choice.” Dr. Philippe BARBE, Department of French Language Education, Atatürk Faculty of Education, explored “The Value and Limits of Interdisciplinarity,” illustrating through social science cases how deeply interdisciplinarity shapes our work. He also clarified common confusions between “interdisciplinarity” and “multidisciplinarity,” and critiqued flawed attempts at integration. The series concluded with Prof. Dr. Machiel KIEL, a leading historian of the Ottoman Balkans. His seminar on Athens and Konitsa during the Ottoman era addressed the Ottoman urban perception, the concept of mahalle/neighborhood, questions of ghettoization, and urban organization. He further presented notable data and insights on the period’s social, cultural, and religious architecture.
